Chapter 12
Jane stared at Jules.
"What? I am telling the truth!" Jules said.
"Did you tell the police this?" Jane asked.
"Nope!" Jules exclaimed.
"So you've told no one?" Jane asked.
"What! I thought it wasn't a big deal. I just concluded after last night and the light incident when I got really scared that this was a big deal and I needed to know who to be careful of. As I stared at all of them in the room, I told myself to think who would have done it. Itâs getting more serious than I thought it would be and scarier too. We all have to be careful. There's a killer on the loose," Jules said. "There's a killer and it's one of us," she whispered
"Great that you realize that now. Tessy has gone with them to the hospital, right?" Jane asked.
Jules nodded.
"There is something else that helps a case build. That is the motive. Even if the police caught one red-handed in the act, they would still interrogate him for hours to find out the motive. So why do you think Tessy would want to poison Adrienne? Think carefully before you answer and don't give me one of your vague answers," Jane said.
Jules gasped. "You're mean! I've been thinking about these all day and all night and you call everything I have said vague? Marcy was wrong. You're just like that big detective."
"I'm not here to be nice, Jules. A lot is going on in my head at the moment as I am sure is happening to you too. I'm trying to make things easier for us," Jane said.
"Okay, okay. Whatever. You're asking the motive. Well, this may sound absurd. Especially after I had written off Gracie's incident and the fact that it was years ago. But that's because it wasn't very significant and Gracie wouldn't remember something as trivial as that," Jules started.
"So, you get to decide what's trivial and what's not?" Jane asked.
"No! I don't mean it that way, but everyone would agree with me, I bet. You'd agree with me too once you hear it," Jules said.
"Go on," Jane encouraged.
"It wasn't such a long time ago as the incident with Gracie. This was later when we were in our finals. We were the most excited because we knew about each other's plans after college. We couldn't wait to get right into it. Marcy has always wanted to have a family and kids and all that. Gracie didn't think Marcy was going to have a family if she left town. She told her all the good men were in Mayhem. But look at things now. It's funny. Esther wanted to be famous. I don't know how. She didn't know how either. She just wanted to be in the movies or a singer or anything that made her famous. Mika had always loved cooking. She didn't cook a lot for us though. She complained we didn't appreciate her skills. She hates the bakery where she works but that's the only place she found a temporary job.
